Raine Bedsole's large paintings position a solitary monumental figure on a background teaming with distinctive elements. There are rough layers of scraped and repainted surfaces on and under which your eye unearths little gems of images of houses, figures, boats or simply abstractions. Often, there are portions of handwritten pages, script by child or adult and chance markings which suggest the importance of text, poetry, the word to Bedsole's imagery. The grand figure itself is often composed of a single medium such as burned twigs or battered nails or leaves mixed with paint or metal leaf or wax. The works read as poetic epics dedicated to the human figure and you feel compelled to examine and interpret the narrative.
