“Having painted only Maine landscapes, I came to Florida searching for images that expressed the distinct quality and personality of this southern location, which would also be meaningful to me. Familiarity with a place increases my interest in its visual relationships, so my process involves walking, looking, thinking, feeling, listening and photographing. When I begin the painting I look at the photograph and trust that some of the other stored elements will help to influence my choices.”
“The landscape has become for me both a source of inspiration and a complex language – a language wrestling to capture the essence of the land and the spirit of being human within it. I paint to clarify the intuitive. The daily process slowly reveals a series of related images, conveying ideas and associations previously unspoken.”
