Gabrielle Mayer's life size renderings of women's fancy dresses play with color and form and texture ( the velvet, the satin, the organdy are breathtakingly rendered ) but also explore the significance and impact of clothing and style in our culture. Her paintings place a single high fashion garment in illusionistic full color against a flat background of another color to create a dazzling “embodied but not inhabited dress in paint.” Gabrielle is currently painting a series of bag dresses. The artist gathers numerous shopping bags from a department store or a supermarket and creates a dress model in her studio. She then paints her astonishing creation on a canvas with Trompe L'Oeil precision.
