“Light in nature has fascinated me since childhood, from the intensity of light in the smallest gem stone to the reflections on water and the glitter of minerals in the geographical strata of the earth. Expressing the visual effects of light has always been an underlying concern in my work. Rather than painting light illusionistically, I utilize materials in my paintings which reflect and refract light naturally including mediums such as interference and iridescent paints and resins formulated to dry with a translucent gloss finish. In my relief works, the transparent polycarbonate plastic, Lexan, which I heat mold to create rippled topographical surfaces, serves as grounds for my painting. In my works on both canvas and Lexan I enjoy expressing the ephemeral qualities of light found in the natural world.”
